Defenders' Experts
Sea Otter

The largest member of the weasel family, the sea otter is also the 2nd smallest marine mammal. Once numbering several hundred thousand to possibly over a million worldwide, their population is now estimated to be between 82,350 and 95,000.
Californians: Sea Otter Fund Needs You!
The California Sea Otter Fund received almost $295,000 from generous California taxpayers for 2008, which keeps it on tax forms for another year! But, in hard economic times, the challenge will be to ensure that the fund remains on income tax forms in 2010.
In the Field
Defenders of Wildlife is working directly on sea otter recovery efforts in California, Washington and Alaska.
Management and Policy
Sea otters were hunted to the brink of extinction, now they occupy only portions of their former range. Defenders advocates for management and policy that will effectively recover populations of sea otters in their current range.
