Tackling Buckthorn in Michigan

In Summer 2009, Defenders' volunteers worked to tear down invasive Buckthorn at Michigan's Lamberton Lake in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

It was the Wildlife Volunteer Corps’ best showing of the year, with 22 volunteers pitting their arms and backs against the gnarly might of the invasive buckthorn, blowing away 2009’s previous WVC attendance record of 14 hearty souls.

Brian Bovard, our Wildlife Volunteer Coordinator, spoke to Melanie Good about the project and she couldn’t say enough about Defenders’ team! She told us that the area Defenders volunteers focused on, while not being the largest area, was perhaps the most densely afflicted – and four large piles of buckthorn at the feet of our volunteers by the end of the day was testimony to that!

The highlight for Melanie was the WVC’s final push that managed to break through and tear down a section she only described as "a wall" that she had never before managed to breach. Melanie had these glowing words to say, "I am speaking honestly when I say, they were one of the best groups I have had. They were hard working and seemed to thoroughly enjoy and appreciate the property."

Kudos to you Wildlife Volunteers! We here at Defenders, and the wildlife at Lamberton Lake, thank you!
