Great Shelburne Pond Eastern Ribbon Snake Search
A dedicated group of Defenders volunteers had a great time working with Jim Andrews, a herpetologist, and Defenders staffer Trish White, in a search for the elusive, colorfully striped Ribbon Snake. The hunt was part of Jim’s work documenting the snakes in Vermont in order to assist in the conservation efforts for all of Vermont’s snakes.
Volunteers enjoyed a sunny day searching the brush near the pond’s wetlands in canoes and kayaks. And although The Great Shelburne Pond Eastern Ribbon Snake Hunt found no ribbon snakes, a fine reptile-rich time was had by all.
The area is prime snake habitat, and the team found several other species. The volunteers helped to catch, measure and photograph snakes along the shore. With their help, we’ve gained a better understanding of the habitat area and the diverse life forms that it supports.
