Invasive Species Clean Up in Virginia
For this two-part project, Defenders paired up with the National Park Service and other conservation groups to protect native plants and animals in Shenandoah National Park.
Native plants were at risk from being overtaken by invasive species that suffocate them. A shortage of native plants reduces habitat quality for birds and other wildlife that call these forests home.
Shenandoah National Park provides essential nesting, migrating, and wintering habitat for imperiled birds. With some luck, volunteers glimpsed the only known peregrine falcon nesting pair in the area and Virginia’s largest population of the rare cerulean warbler!
