Habitat Restoration for Endangered Cottontails in Maine

Volunteers, 2009Well it was another successful year for the Cottontail up in New England as the Defenders Wildlife Volunteer Corps braved the weather and took on a two-day mission in Scarborough and Kittery, Maine, to plant shrubs and restore native habitat for the state endangered New England Cottontail Rabbit.

Having a great showing both days, our Wildlife Volunteer Corps members banded together with other volunteers to plant over 4,000 elderberry, bayberry, hazelnut, black cherry, nannyberry, red osier dogwood, Virginia rose, grey dogwood, and silky dogwood in two days!! The shrubs planted on the two sites will create excellent habitat, good cover, and nutritious browse for the imperiled New England Cottonwood Rabbit to help them on their path to recovery.

It was a great showing for Defenders in not such great weather. So kudos to those who braved the elements to help our furry friends. The Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge, Defenders of Wildlife, and the rabbits all thank you!

Join the Corps!
