Victory for Cook Inlet Belugas!
On October 17, 2008, the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration announced that the Cook Inlet beluga whale population
near Anchorage is in danger of extinction, and has been listed as an endangered
species. That means that these rare white whales will finally get vital
protections against pollution and other threats to their survival.
During the two years leading up to this, Defenders' supporters have sent more than 80,000 messages urging federal officials to take action to protect Cook Inlet belugas, with more than 10,000 Defenders' activists contacting the agency in just the month leading up to this decision!
