Wildlife Conservation Workshop Itinerary
This exclusive trip inside Yellowstone National Park gives President's Council members a first-hand look at Defenders' conservation work.
Here is the itinerary for the 2009 workshop:
Thursday, August 6
Participants are greeted at Bozeman airport by Defenders staff with lunch and a scenic drive to the Yellowstone Association Institute’s Buffalo Ranch in the heart of the Lamar Valley in the northeastern corner of the park, where wolves, bison, elk and grizzlies roam. Our workshop commences with a welcome dinner and orientation.
Friday, August 7
We will depart at 6 am for the first of many wildlife viewing opportunities, and then return to the Institute later in the morning to hear about wolves in the park and the changes in park ecosystem dynamics since the reintroduction. Following lunch and a discussion led by reintroduction expert, Doug Smith and Fish and Wildlife service special agent, Tim Eicher, about Defenders’ work to build positive relationships between wolves and local communities, we explore more of the beautiful Lamar Valley. After dinner, participants can choose to either relax at the Institute or take advantage of a special nature photography workshop led by Jim Clark.
Saturday, August 8
We start our day with another early morning wildlife viewing. After lunch, we will hike two miles up to the historic Rose Creek wolf acclimation pen where we learn more about the events related to the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone. Later on we will return to the Institute to meet with Defenders’ President, Rodger Schlickeisen and Executive Vice President, Jamie Clark for an update and discussion on Defenders’ current work and priorities.
Sunday, August 9
After a final morning of wildlife viewing, we will hear about our collaborative efforts with the Obama administration and Defenders’ plans for the future. The group will split later in the afternoon for either a moderate or more rigorous hike, and then come together for a closing dinner and discussion.
Monday, August 10
After breakfast, we depart Yellowstone for the airport
Participants should be able to walk at least two miles over uneven terrain. Altitudes within the park range from 5,200 to 11,300 feet.
