Defenders of Wildlife joined with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to bring wolves
back to Yellowstone and Idaho. Nearly a decade later, these areas once again echo with the howl of
wolves—truly one of our country’s greatest conservation success stories.
The first report in our annual series, in which we examine refuges across the country
and chose the 10 most endangered based on criteria such as the magnitude and timeliness of the threat; the
significance of the refuge to our natural wildlife heritage; the opportunity for action to address the
problem; and the refuge's representation of overall threats to the system.
