The Bailey Wildlife Foundation Proactive Carnivore Conservation Fund

Defenders created The Bailey Wildlife Foundation Proactive Carnivore Conservation Fund to prevent conflict between imperiled predators and humans by supporting the use of preventative measures, including nonlethal deterrents and best management practices.

The program works directly with landowners and communities to:

  1. reduce conflicts between predators and humans;
  2. keep predators from being unnecessarily killed by agencies in response to human conflicts; and
  3. increase general tolerance for carnivores across the landscape.

Projects may be proposed by landowners or other entities to address predator problems. Proposed projects are prioritized based on the level of human-carnivore conflict in an area and the likelihood that the proposed solution will resolve the problem.

Projects

217 projects have been supported by the fund from 1998-2007 with expenditures totaling more than $739,000.

Background

Defenders created the Proactive Carnivore Conservation Fund to prevent conflict between imperiled predators and humans before it occurs.

The program is a natural outgrowth of our wolf and grizzly bear compensation programs, which offer payments to livestock owners for livestock losses caused by wolves or grizzly bears.

Defenders in the Field

Defenders of Wildlife is actively involved with land and livestock owners, rural communities and recreationists to help implement nonlethal proactive methods addressing conflicts between carnivores and humans. These measures help to reduce conflicts on the landscape and promote conservation of imperiled species.
