Great Lakes Wolves: In the Field
Wolves returning to their former habitat face a changing landscape due to human development, which may lead to conflicts between humans and wolves. As a result, lethal control may be used in response to incidents, particularly when livestock are killed by wolves. To reduce or prevent these occurrences, Defenders established the Defenders of Wildlife Proactive Carnivore Conservation Fund. This fund helps advance nonlethal wolf control through on-the-ground projects. In the Great Lakes, Defenders has supported farmers and wildlife managers in using livestock guard dogs, fladry (a type of fencing made out of flags), population monitoring by airplane and other innovative tools to prevent wolf-livestock conflicts. These are practical, science-based methods that have proven highly effective.
