2009 Carnivore Conference: Carnivore Conservation in a Changing World

Carnivores 2009 Registration Brochure

Carnivores 2009: Carnivore Conservation in a Changing World was a great success! Defenders would like to thank the 550 scientists, environmentalists and activists who joined us in Denver to discuss current research and programs related to the preservation and protection of a wide array of carnivore species.

The theme of the 2009 conference was the foremost conservation challenge today: climate change. Fluctuations in temperature and precipitation affect all carnivores, not only those species that depend on snow and ice. Conference sessions explored the impacts of climate change, examined ways to adapt our conservation paradigm to a warming climate, and discussed how maintaining and restoring top predators can help systems better respond to the changes ahead.

Sessions also highlighted important topics including the impact of renewable energy on carnivore populations, the role of politics in the protection of these species and connectivity as key to conserving those remaining populations. Recovery and conflict reduction, management and mismanagement, behavior and ecology were all key topics when discussing carnivore species, especially highlighting wolves.
