Wolverines: In the Field

In 2000, there had been only two scientific studies conducted in the lower 48 on wolverine. In fact, the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) initially used the lack of information on wolverines and their status as an excuse not to list the wolverine as a threatened species.

To back up the rationale for protecting the wolverine and to better understand how to conserve this unusual species, Defenders worked in cooperation with the Forest Service and Glacier National Park to support crucial wolverine research.

By tracking wolverines with radio-collars we learned about which types of habitat they prefer, what they eat, and where they den and raise young.

See a detailed description of this research project, including annual project reports featuring beautiful wolverine photos and fascinating information about this remarkable species on the Wolverine Foundation website.
