Wolverines: In the Field

Here is a current range map for wolverines in the American West (Aubry et al. 2007. J. Wildl. Mgmt. 71(7):2147-2158).

And here is a recent model output that shows how wolverines connect across the vast northern Rocky Mountains region (Schwartz et al. 2009, Ecology 90(11):3222-3232).

Defenders is protecting these areas critical to wolverines by working to prevent human activities and developments that disturb wolverines, and by helping land managers and the local communities understand the importance of maintaining these areas for wolverines.

Much of this area is on national forest lands, such as the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest in southwestern Montana, where Defenders is working to restrict snowmobiles from important wolverine denning habitat.

Some of the key wolverine corridors shown in orange above are bisected bv major human highways.  Defenders is working with biologists to better understand where wolverines can safely cross these roads, and bringing local citizens out to the corridor areas to build awareness and support for their protection.
