Piping Plover

Piping Plover by Tom VezoPiping plovers, named for their peeping, whistling-like song, are small shorebirds, that live along the shorelines of lakes, rivers, wetlands and beaches of North America. They are threatened by human activities including beach development and off-road vehicle beach driving. Defenders has been working to help piping plover populations recover from their threatened and endangered status by encouraging proper beach management.

The breeding population at the Cape Hatteras National Seashore has declined from 15 nesting pairs in 1989 to only 6 nesting pairs in 2007, largely due to off-road vehicle driving. Learn what we are doing to ensure piping plover populations are properly managed.
