Piping Plover
Piping plovers, named for their peeping, whistling-like song, are small shorebirds, that live along the shorelines of lakes, rivers, wetlands and
beaches of North America. They are threatened by human activities
including beach development and off-road vehicle beach
driving. Defenders has been working
to help piping plover populations recover from their threatened and endangered
status by encouraging proper beach management.
Management and Policy
The breeding population at the Cape Hatteras National Seashore has declined from 15 nesting pairs in 1989 to only 6 nesting pairs in 2007, largely due to off-road vehicle driving. Learn what we are doing to ensure piping plover populations are properly managed.
