Grizzly Bear Management and Policy

Through the protections of the Endangered Species Act, agencies and conservation groups like Defenders have been working together to implement recovery plans for grizzly bears that include reducing threats to critical bear habitat and reducing bear deaths.

While we have made progress in protecting grizzly bear habitat, in the past two decades hundreds of grizzly bears have died at the hand of man. Whether they are euthanized by managers after they get into trouble with garbage, illegally shot by people bent on undermining recovery, or hit by cars, many grizzly bears die annually at the hands of humans. Defenders has a number of projects in place to try to address these threats and keep grizzly bears alive.

For specific actions needed to recover grizzly bears, read Defenders Places for Grizzlies publication.
