Grizzly Bear
Once common throughout the mountains and the Great Plains the grizzly bear (or brown bear) has been reduced to 2% of their historic range in the lower 48 states. A total of only 1,200-1,400 individuals still survive in five populations. For thirty years, Defenders has been actively involved in trying to make sure that this remarkable animal is recovered throughout its range.
Help us keep bears alive
The primary factor limiting grizzly bear recovery is human-caused mortality. Bears die when they get into trouble with people’s garbage, livestock, when they are hit by cars and trains or illegally killed. By preventing these conflicts we can keep bears alive and on the road to recovery.
Electric Fence Incentive Form 2011 Defenders of Wildlife will contribute $100 to the cost of installing an electric fence around livestock, chicken coops or beeyards within certain geographic areas in Montana. Download this form for further details and to apply.
In the Field
Defenders is working in cooperation with a diverse group of private landowners, state, tribal and federal agencies to complete on-the-ground projects to keep grizzly bears and other predators out of trouble.Management and Policy
Hunting, trapping and habitat loss have all contributed to decreasing populations of grizzly bears. Helped by the protections of the Endangered Species Act, Defenders has been working with state and federal land managers to protect grizzly bear habitat and prevent grizzly bears from being killed by people.
