Kids for Cubs
Presentations
Slide or PowerPoint presentations illustrating bear behavior and biology, where bears occur in Florida, threats to their survival, and ways we can save the Florida bear and its habitat.
Umbrella Game
A group activity in which children play the parts of various wildlife species native to Florida, the game illustrates the Florida black bear’s role as an "umbrella species." The concept of protecting habitat for the bear which also protects habitat for numerous other Florida species is a central theme throughout Kids for Cubs and is reinforced through the activities and associated materials.
Teacher-led Activities
The program provides teachers with a number of interactive activities and games as follow-up. These activities range from bear related arts and crafts, to exercises involving the Internet and letter writing.
Student Activities
Written materials including word finds, coloring sheets, and crossword puzzles reinforce concepts explained in the presentation. These materials may be used independently by each student.
Florida Black Bear Resource Box
A traveling education kit is available free on loan through the Campaign. The box is designed to encourage understanding of the "umbrella" concept, the Florida black bear and conservation generally. In the box three Florida Black Bear Curriculum Guide lessons are included along with hands-on materials such as puppets, books, a video, poster and skull replicas.
