Habitat for Bears Campaign Educational Programs and Materials

The Imperiled Bears of Florida Presentation

A program given to adults throughout Florida. The slide show incorporates scientific information, explains how saving the bears’ habitat will help preserve the wide variety of Florida’s species, and how citizens can conserve wildlife habitat and prevent human-bear conflicts.

The Imperiled Bears of Florida Exhibit

An 8'x8', multi-media, free standing display that is available for loan free to libraries, museums, nature centers and other indoor venues. The panels depict information about bear habitat, ecology, and survival pressures.

The Florida Black Bear Curriculum Guide

A joint project of Defenders and the Florida Wildlife Commission is for school children in 3rd to 8th grades. Ten lessons, meeting Sunshine State Standards, address reading, language arts, history, math, geography and much more. Among the topics are how bears are different from the Florida panther, how the Florida black bear differs from other bears around the world, other animals and plants in the bear’s native community, and how human activities affect bears. The guide is available through Defenders and teachers training workshops.

Florida Black Bear Curriculum Guide Teacher Training Workshops
Free workshops; typically 4 to 6 hours long. The Florida Wildlife Commission’s Project Wild program along with Defenders staff and volunteers organize and facilitate workshops across the state. Teacher workshops include the Kids for Cubs presentation and bear bio-fact demonstrations.

The Florida Black Bear Resource Box

A free for loan education kit complete with hands-on materials including puppets, books, fact sheets, brochures, a poster, video and skull and foot replicas.

Conserve Wildlife License Plate

The license plate raises close to $500,000 per year for programs of the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission.

I Care for Florida’s Bear Stickers

Free round, colorful stickers that feature a drawing of the bear, a snowy egret, and the Defenders of Wildlife website address.

The Florida Black Bear Interpretive Sign

A 3' x 4' weatherproof, full color panel for use as an interpretive guide on trails or as an educational tool for nature centers, zoos, and museums. The sign is a digital-image, polycarbonate panel displaying pictures of the bear, lists bear facts, its distribution, threats to the bears’ survival and how people can protect the bear and its habitat. The panel can be used as a stationary or transportable display.
