Channel Island Fox Management and Policy

The Channel Island fox has been list as endangered under the Endangered Species Act since 2004. Defenders fights legislature that adversely affects Channel Island foxes and is actively involved in recovery planning.

Legislative Action

Defenders worked tirelessly to help defeat an amendment to the Defense Authorization Bill that would have transferred one of the islands from the Park Service to the military and likely allowed hunting of non-native deer and elk on one of the islands beyond the currently agreed phase out date of 2010. This amendment would have also undermined 10 years and $3 million spent on the recovery of island foxes.
