Once more than 20 million bison roamed across many parts of the United States. Today just a few thousand remain and the vast majority are raised for food production. The only place where wild, continuously free roaming bison exist is Yellowstone National Park. But even here bison are at great risk.
America's last free-roaming wild bison are being slaughtered on a scale not seen since the 1800s. And hundreds more are slated to be killed.
