Bats

Indiana bat, USFWSBats, the only mammals capable of true sustained flight, make up a quarter of all mammal species on earth and are an important part of many healthy ecosystems.

While many of us associate bats with vampires, most bats (about 70%) consume insects, thus helping to control the spread of insect-borne disease and reducing insect damage caused to crops and vegetation. Bats also help pollinate many types of vegetation.

Background and Recovery

Nine bat species found in America are listed as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act. These bats face many threats, including persecution, habitat destruction and disease.
