Monitoring and adaptive management

Appropriate management of the network is an ongoing process and must be maintained and adjusted as needed. Simultaneously, data should be continuously collected and monitored to assess the effectiveness of management practices and implementation activities. Monitoring results can be analyzed and evaluated to improve future efforts. Activities and goals may be altered if the desired results are not being achieved.

Implementation activities should also be monitored to make sure that planned actions and efforts to achieve goals are being accomplished. The network map may be modified based on achieving implementation actions and goals. It should be periodically updated and revised as changes to management practices and land ownership and continuous threats, such as sprawling development, may alter the biodiversity values of the lands and waters on the network map.

Involving and educating citizens, especially through hands-on inventory efforts, may not only provide help for implementation activities but also provide public awareness that may have long-term effects. The Massachusetts BioMap Project’s Biodiversity Days provides citizen’s opportunities to learn about and familiarize themselves with biodiversity through documentation of plant and animal species found in their communities.
