Defenders v. Minerals Management Service
On May 17, 2010, Defenders of Wildlife and the Southern Environmental Law Center filed suit challenging the Minerals Management Service’s (agency name later changed to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (“BOEM”) complicity in the Gulf oil disaster and continued lax oversight of oil and gas leasing in the Gulf of Mexico following the Deepwater Horizon incident. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Alabama, and seeks to remedy BOEM’s ongoing failure to appropriately assess the risks and impacts of oil and gas drilling on endangered species and the rest of the Gulf ecosystem.
