California Sea Otter Fund Extended
Defenders of Wildlife has worked tirelessly since 2006 to promote the California Sea Otter tax check-off box located on the state tax forms and, as of 2015, the fund has raised more than $2 million for sea otter conservation and research. In 2015, Defenders worked with California representative Bill Monning (D-Carmel) to introduce legislation that would renew the tax check-off program for another five years. Governor Jerry Brown signed the bill into law this August.

Room to Move
On December 18, 2012 the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) signed a final rule that formally put an end to the "no otter zone," eliminating the failed experiment in active management of sea otters on California's coast and truly allowing natural range expansion to occur. During the 60 day comment period for the rule, Defenders of Wildlife and nearly 12,000 of its supporters sent comments to FWS in support of the repeal.
