Statement by Rodger Schlickeisen, President of Defenders of Wildlife, on H.R. 418

(02/10/2005) - Washington, DC -- "The Sensenbrenner bill exposes thousand of acres of public land along the Mexican and Canadian borders to tremendous environmental damage, including damage to many of our nation's national parks, forests and monuments, wildlife refuges and wilderness areas.  

Defenders of Wildlife certainly agrees with the need to protect our nation’s borders, but we do not need to sacrifice some of our nation's most cherished wilderness areas to do so.  Communities along the border will also be affected by the Sensenbrenner bill as proposed construction projects move ahead without environmental oversight or judicial review.  

Our environmental laws are flexible enough to allow us to protect our borders, our wildlife and our environment at the same time; Rep. Sensenbrenner's bill needlessly upsets that balance and poses a significant risk to many of our nation's species and wild lands," stated Rodger Schlickeisen, President of Defenders of Wildlife.
