"This bison is a federal resource on a national wildlife refuge. The Fish and Wildlife Service has worked for decades to reestablish this bison herd and the native prairie habitat found on the refuge for the benefit of the American people," said Rodger Schickeisen of Defenders of Wildlife. "We hope the authorities apprehend the perpetrator of this irresponsible act."
Refuge officials spent hours rounding up and tranquilizing the bison. The wounded bison was treated by a veterinarian from the Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines. Authorities are investigating the incident and testing the arrow for fingerprints. A refuge official says the culprit could be fined several thousand dollars.
"While this is an unfortunate incident, we are convinced there are members of the public are willing to step forward to assist authorities and help solve this crime," added Schlickeisen.
Schlickeisen emphasized the importance of public involvement in addressing incidents like these, stating, "We hope that anyone with information that could lead to the apprehension of the individual or individuals involved will do the right thing and call (515) 994-3400."
Anyone with information should contact the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge headquarters at (515) 994-3400.
