Defenders of Wildlife Announces Board Officers
Caroline Gabel, president of Shared Earth Foundation, is the new Vice Chair, and actor Edward Asner has taken on duties as board Secretary. Alan W. Steinberg was re-elected as Treasurer. All three have served in other capacities on the Defenders board prior to these changes. Alan R. Pilkington, who chaired the board for four years, will continue to serve on the Board executive committee.
“Winsome brings to the table a tremendous depth of knowledge of environmental advocacy and the foundation community, and Defenders is tremendously fortunate to have her insight and involvement. These changes will really add to the excellent work the Board of Directors has done under Alan Pilkington’s leadership to build an organization that leads the field in strategic thinking, membership growth and effective advocacy on behalf of wildlife and habitat across the country and around the world,” said Defenders President Rodger Schlickeisen.
McIntosh, formerly of Palm Beach, Florida and now of Washington, D.C., has served since 1971 as trustee and officer of the McIntosh Foundation, a family foundation with a strong focus on environmental grantmaking. In three decades of philanthropic work, she also founded the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties, the Association for Small Foundations, and Rachel’s Network, a national network of women philanthropists with an emphasis on environmental giving. She also serves on the board of the League of Conservation Voters and is president of Philanthropic Services, a management consulting firm for foundations.
In addition to being president of The Shared Earth Foundation, Gabel, of Chestertown, Maryland and Washington, D.C., serves on the boards of Orangutan Foundation International, RARE Center for Tropical Conservation, Eastern Shore Land Conservancy, Friends of the National Zoo, and Washington Opera Society. Gabel’s professional career also includes work since 1970 as a senior staffer to U.S. Rep. James Oberstar and the U.S. House Committee on Public Works and Transportation, as well as at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In those capacities, Gabel had a significant hand in the development of major legislation and federal policy on clean water, transportation, and other important issues.
Asner, of Los Angeles, is best known for his role as Lou Grant on the Mary Tyler Moore Show and Lou Grant. He is the winner of 7 Emmys and 5 Golden Globe awards. Asner has a long history of engagement in important issues, and is active in many organizations, including National Committee to Abolish the Death Penalty, American Civil Liberties Union, and Amnesty International. He is a former national president of the Screen Actors Guild, which just presented him with its Lifetime Achievement Award.
Steinberg is Managing Partner of The Alan W. Steinberg Limited Partnership, an investment partnership, and is also Trustee and Treasurer of The Nature Conservancy Florida Chapter, and Director of the Tropical Audubon Society.
“Defenders of Wildlife is widely respected in the
environmental and philanthropic communities, and that’s a strong tribute to the
dedicated work and clear strategic vision of its Board of Directors. Winsome
McIntosh, Caroline Gabel, Ed Asner, and Alan Steinberg all have a strong,
lasting commitment to Defenders’ mission, and I feel confident in their
leadership of the board,” Schlickeisen said.
