Defenders commends EPW for furthering efforts to address climate impacts on wildlife & natural resources
Legislation would hold polluters accountable, create green jobs
Washington (November 5, 2009) – The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee (EPW) today reported the Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act, S. 1733, out of committee – a historic step forward in America’s fight to reduce carbon pollution, safeguard our natural resources from climate impacts, strengthen the economy, and increasing our national security.
The following is a statement by Rodger Schlickeisen, president for Defenders of Wildlife:
“Today’s historic action by Chairman Boxer brings us closer to achieving a clean energy future that will revitalize our economy and increase national security while at the same time tackling climate change by holding polluters accountable for the greenhouse gas emissions they produce.
“Defenders thanks Chairman Boxer and her committee for maintaining the momentum towards positive action on climate change despite encountering roadblocks and hurdles at every turn. It is vital that we address our heavy reliance on dirty fuels and other causes of global warming emissions. It’s just as important that we address the impacts of climate change that are already being seen and felt by humans, wildlife and the natural resources that we all rely on. We are pleased that members of the Senate EPW have recognized the urgent need to safeguard our wildlife and natural resources from the worst impacts of global warming.
“We look forward to working with the Senate to pass strong climate legislation that provides substantial dedicated funding to safeguard America’s wildlife and vital natural resources.”
