Fish and Wildlife Service takes important step toward addressing climate change
Strategy, action plan will help wildlife & habitat survive impacts of global warming
- Today the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) released a strategic plan for responding to the impacts of climate change on wildlife and habitats through adaptation and mitigation actions, and through engagement with other agencies.
- The strategy and accompanying five-year action plan are an important first step toward helping wildlife and natural resources survive the impacts of global warming.
- Defenders of Wildlife looks forward to working with FWS to help implement this strategic plan.
WASHINGTON (September 23, 2009) – The following is a statement from Jamie Rappaport Clark, executive vice president for Defenders of Wildlife:
“Global warming is forever changing the world and forever changing conservation. No longer can we rely on our past understanding of wildlife and ecosystems. The nation must chart a new way forward: first by developing a national climate change adaptation strategy for wildlife and natural resources; second by enhancing our scientific capacity; and finally, by providing the resources needed to address this enormous challenge.
“The release of this strategic plan shows the commitment of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to not only reduce global warming pollution but to also conserve wildlife and our environment for ourselves and generations to come.”
