Defenders of Wildlife heralds passage of historic energy and climate legislation by Key House committee

WASHINGTON – Last night the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee, led by Chairman Henry Waxman and Chairman Edward Markey, voted to approve passage of the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009. This historic energy and climate legislation not only places a mandatory cap on damaging greenhouse gas emissions, but also takes an important step in the right direction towards addressing the impacts global warming is already having on America’s communities, wildlife and natural ecosystems.

The following is a statement by Robert Dewey, vice president for Government Relations.

“Defenders of Wildlife is grateful for the leadership shown by Chairmen Waxman and Markey, and by other House champions on natural resources including Representatives John Dingell, Nick Rahall, Raul Grijalva and Norm Dicks in taking vital action towards addressing climate change and its impact on natural resources.

“While significantly more dedicated funding, and more stringent greenhouse gas reductions, will ultimately be needed to truly address the threats of global warming on our wildlife and natural resources, the bill is a promising development. We look forward to working with the House and Senate to further increase the funding necessary to safeguard America’s wildlife and natural resources and pass the strongest climate and energy bill possible – as soon as possible.”
