Boxer calls for safeguarding wildlife and natural resources from global warming
Unavoidable impacts of climate change among top priorities in Boxer's principles
WASHINGTON – Quoting President Barack Obama, Senator Barbara Boxer stated that: “Few challenges facing America – and the world – are more urgent than combating climate change.” Taking swift action against this challenge, Senator Boxer and the Democratic majority today issued a set of principles laying out the policy prescriptions Congress needs to act on in order to combat global warming.
The following is a statement by Jamie Clark, executive vice president for Defenders of Wildlife.
“Senator Boxer’s firm resolve to face global warming head-on builds on the momentum of the Obama administration in recognizing global warming as a top priority issue facing Americans.
“These principles are an important step towards not only reducing emissions, but also tackling the damaging effects of global warming that threaten our natural ecosystems and wildlife.
“A healthy environment and a healthy community go hand in hand. Our economic growth and public health depend on safeguarding America’s natural ecosystems and wildlife from the growing impact of global warming.
“We applaud Senator Boxer for recognizing that any legislation addressing global warming would be incomplete if it did not include the funding, planning and scientific knowledge needed to conserve the wildlife and natural systems already threatened by global warming – systems that offer basic life-sustaining services for people around the country and the world.”
