File Your Taxes and Help California's Sea Otters

Defenders of Wildlife's new campaign encourages California taxpayers to check off donation box to protect sea otters

Monterey Bay, CA -- This tax season, Californians can support the state's efforts to save the endangered sea otter by simply checking the new CA Sea Otter Fund donation box on their state income tax form.

Taxpayers who choose to mark the donation box can contribute any amount they desire, starting at $1. According to the legislation that established this fund, all money contributed to the fund is guaranteed to be used to support efforts to reduce sea otter deaths and to provide for research and programs related to sea otters. A total of at least $250,000 in donations must be received from the CA Sea Otter Fund donation box for this particular fund to appear on the state income tax form in coming years.

Defenders of Wildlife has launched an awareness campaign in California to spread the word and seeks to surpass this sum.

"We are dedicated to making sure that taxpayers in California know about this opportunity and check the box to help save sea otters," said Jim Curland, marine program associate for Defenders of Wildlife. "This is possibly the easiest way to do your part in saving an iconic California species."

The organization has also teamed up with Philippe Cousteau, president of EarthEcho International and noted conservationist and explorer, to release a series of radio ads and posters touting the new sea otter fund.

"The sea otter is one of California's most endearing and most endangered animals," said Cousteau. "Taxpayers here have the opportunity to make a positive difference by checking the sea otter donation box to make sure that we pass our otters on to future generations."

Jim Curland and Philippe Cousteau are available for comment and to answer any questions regarding sea otters, their coastal habitat and the new CA Sea Otter Fund.
