Defenders' Scientist Shares Nobel Prize

Defenders' senior climate-change scientist, Jean Brennan, who served on the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), was one of a few scientists recognized for her "substantial contribution to the award of the Nobel Peace Prize for the 2007 to the IPCC," a prize the IPCC shares with former Vice President Al Gore. The group's report delineated how human activities are affecting the climate and urged governments around the world to take action to curb this threat. Brennan worked on many IPCC technical reports and participated in various working groups and negotiating sessions.

Defenders Advocates a Comprehensive Response to Global Warming

Released in November, Defenders' latest report, Beyond Cutting Emissions: Protecting Wildlife and Ecosystems in a Warming World, highlights the threats that global warming poses to wildlife and recommends the federal government coordinate a well-funded and scientific national response to help wildlife and ecosystems survive and adapt.

Defenders Presents 2008 Conservation Awards

Defenders presented awards to four conservation heroes at its second annual Wildlife Conservation Awards Dinner in September in Washington, D.C. Former Clinton Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt won the prestigious Defenders of Wildlife Legacy Award. The Spirit of Defenders Award for Public Service went to Rep. Norm Dicks (D-Wash.), chairman of the Interior Appropriations Subcommittee in the U.S. House of Representatives. The Spirit of Defenders Award for Science went to Dr. Thomas Lovejoy, president of the Heinz Center for Science, Economics and the Environment. Diana Hadley of Arizona received the Spirit of Defenders Award for Citizen Advocacy for her work with the Northern Jaguar Project.
