Defenders in Action: Alaska Wolves Face Gunners
Despite the fact that the citizens of Alaska have twice voted to ban the aerial killing of wolves, the state Board of Game and Governor Frank Murkowski released applications for permits this fall allowing hunters and trappers to kill wolves using aircraft (see Defenders, fall 2003). The program’s goal is to kill all of the wolves in a 2,200 square-mile area in interior Alaska to boost moose populations for hunters. Gunners can kill males, females and pups under the auspices of the program.
