Defenders in Action: Defenders Launches Wolf Recovery Campaign

Defenders of Wildlife has launched an aggressive regional wolf recovery and education campaign since filing a petition last April with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to develop a recovery plan for gray wolves in northern California and southwestern Oregon. Defenders’ traveled to 13 events in the region and met with conservation groups and other interested parties.

In November, Defenders appeared before the Siskiyou County board of supervisors in Yreka, California, to counter misrepresentations previously made to the board by the local Cattleman’s Association and the Farm Bureau. The controversy drew widespread media attention and raised public awareness of the potential for wolf recovery in the region, yet the board passed a resolution stating its opposition to the reintroduction of wolves. Defenders has been working in the region to develop wolf stakeholders meetings and will continue to build bridges of communication between wolf recovery advocates and opponents.
