Defenders in Action: Defenders in Mexico
Defenders has started a program in Mexico to address the country’s wildlife issues. One of Defenders’ new Mexican Biodiversity Program’s first projects is working to protect sea turtles and their habitat. The new program works with individuals protecting sea turtle nests as well as with local and state governments in Veracruz to ensure the recovery of healthy turtle populations. Defenders is also working at the federal level to ensure that sea turtles are protected throughout Mexico.
All of the world’s sea turtles are considered endangered or imperiled. The coast of Veracruz is an important nesting area for turtles, especially Kemp’s Ridley, whose populations are slowly recovering but still considered critically endangered.
Another Mexico program is promoting "Java Forest," a line of shade-grown coffee now available for purchase through Defenders’ website. As natural forest habitats continue to decline, migratory birds and other wildlife are increasingly finding refuge in the forest-like canopies of shade coffee farms. By following time-honored growing traditions, shade-coffee farmers are providing important benefits to hundreds of species of birds, bats, cats and other wildlife.
