Defenders in Action: Defenders in Europe
Defenders Transportation Associate Trisha White joined a 13-member U.S. delegation that toured five European countries in October to gain a better understanding of wildlife and transportation conflicts and solutions and how to apply them in the United States.
The U.S. team met with representatives from transportation and environmental ministries, research organizations and non-governmental organizations. The team also visited more than 25 "green" bridges, wildlife crossings and tunnels throughout France, Germany, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Switzerland.
In order to reduce the impacts of roads and highways, these countries build structures — from mile-wide overpasses to foot-wide culverts — to reconnect habitats on both sides. "We have a great deal to learn from our friends in Europe," says White. "They don’t take their wildlife for granted, and they include conservation in every decision they make."
