Defenders in Action: Defenders Fights for Wolf Protection and Recovery
Defenders continues to lead the fight for ongoing wolf protection and recovery. The long-awaited federal wolf reclassification rule — which affects the species level of protection under the Endangered Species Act — is expected this spring, but unfortunately it will significantly lessen protection and conservation goals for the gray wolf, according to information from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The rule removes the proposal to officially recognize the need for wolf recovery in the northeast, and it significantly expands the size of the western and northern Rockies recovery area without increasing the recovery goals. It also ignores some important potential wolf recovery areas such as California, Washington and the southern Rockies.
Defenders staff is working hard to ensure that the administration hears from wolf advocates who want the wolf’s future to be secure. In addition to working with its own large corps of wolf activists, Defenders is collaborating with other national, regional and local environmental groups on a letter protesting the lessening of wolf protections. To date, approximately 20 groups have signed on, with many more expected.
