Defenders in Action: Defenders Applauds Moratorium Preventing Wolf Killings
In November, Ontario Minister of Natural Resources John Snobelen announced a 30-month moratorium on trapping and killing wolves in the 39 townships surrounding Canada’s Algonquin park. The Canadian government recently declared the gray wolf as a species of special concern in response to declining population rates. The ban expanded on recommendations from the Algonquin Wolf Advisory Group, whose research concluded that mortality rates for the wolves were exceptionally high in the townships right outside of the park.
