Defenders in Action: Defenders Helps Improve Farm Legislation
Defenders, in cooperation with sustainable agriculture proponents and conservation groups, was successful in obtaining important increases in funding and new beneficial habitat conservation programs in the recently authorized Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002, previously referred to as the Farm Bill. Accomplishments include a new conservation security program that will provide assistance to those who voluntarily act as stewards of essential plant and animal habitat, a new grasslands reserve program, and an expanded wildlife habitat incentives program that will allow landowners to protect and restore habitat for threatened and endangered species for 15 years or longer. Conservationists were not happy, however, with significant problems with the law related to increased subsidy levels and adverse impacts on wildlife habitat.
