Defenders in Action: Clean Waters in Jeopardy

The Bush administration is planning changes to the Clean Water Act that will slash safeguards for wildlife habitat and drinking water supplies. Under the proposed rule changes, more than half of the streams and nearly 40 percent of the wetlands in the mid-Atlantic region alone could lose protection, according to a recent analysis by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The Bush plan “will have serious effects on the progress made during the last thirty years to restore and maintain the chemical, physical and biological integrity of the nation’s water," states the EPA report.

“If the Bush Administration goes forward with this rulemaking, many of our nation’s wetlands, ponds and streams will lose the protections they have enjoyed for decades," says Susan Prolman, government relations counsel for Defenders. “The result will be devastating for fish, waterfowl and other wildlife."
