Funding for Wildlife and Habitat

Environmental programs are vital to efforts in our nation to protect the last vestiges of our magnificent natural heritage and to pass on a clean, healthy and vibrant environment to our children.

Efforts by federal wildlife agencies to protect endangered species; work by land management agencies to properly manage our national wildlife refuges, parks and forests; and actions by regulatory agencies to keep our air and water clean and stop toxic pollution all depend on adequate funding. 

Defenders of Wildlife is advocating for sufficient funding for key federal wildlife programs.  Agencies such as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, Forest Service, and U.S. Geological Survey need adequate funding to effectively fulfill their vital role in conserving our nation’s wildlife.  This funding supports essential programs that:

• Protect wildlife, such as endangered plants and animals, migratory birds, and species of global concern
• Support investigation and prevention of wildlife crimes
• Operate and maintain our national wildlife refuges, forests and public lands
• Conduct the sound science necessary for management of our natural resources
