Graphic Design Intern

Defenders of Wildlife is a national, nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to the protection of all native animals and plants in their natural communities.  Founded in 1947, Defenders is one of the country’s leaders in science-based, results-oriented wildlife conservation. Organizational priorities include protecting and restoring imperiled North American wildlife; ensuring conservation of wildlife and habitat on federal public lands, with particular emphasis on national wildlife refuges and national forests; and ensuring the adoption and implementation of a national program for the conservation of wildlife, habitat and ecosystems in the face of global warming.

The graphic design internship is designed to provide a range of experiences within a nonprofit environment, including graphic design, photography, typography and technology.

Under the guidance of a top designer and editor, you will have the opportunity to add to your portfolio as you learn from the best, experience the deadlines and challenges of a fast-paced office environment and develop the skills it takes to succeed. Qualified applicants will be design students with a strong interest in wildlife, nature and the outdoors.

Please note that this is an unpaid internship. Students are encouraged to seek funding opportunities through their schools or outside sources. We do not offer transportation stipends.


  • Graphic Design: design across media, to include print, online, and fabric. 

  • Photography: photo researching, editing, cataloguing and adding images into our digital asset management system. 

  • Typography: hierarchy, type systems.  

  • Technology: Adobe Creative Cloud, Extensis Portfolio and Jive software on Mac OS.


  • You must have experience with the Adobe Creative Suite on a Mac operating system. 

  • You must have a passion for graphic design, demonstrated by a portfolio of student, volunteer or semi-professional graphic design examples. 

  • You must be a currently enrolled in an accredited college, and receiving college credit for this internship.
