Transportation Bill

In August 2005, President Bush signed the federal transportation bill providing $286.5 billion in funding for highways and transit through FY 2009. The bill, known as SAFETEA-LU, is detrimental for the environment overall, but it does include some important, and historic, milestones for America's wildlife. These include:

  • provision to integrate consideration of wildlife conservation into the transportation planning process
  • the commissioning of a comprehensive study on the causes and impacts of wildlife-vehicle collisions
  • fully funding the Enhancements program that provides funding for wildlife passages
