Under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), orangutans are listed as endangered, which means they in danger of extinction within the foreseeable future throughout all or a significant portion of their range.
According to the IUCN Red List, the Sumatran species is critically endangered and the Bornean species of orangutans is endangered.
Both species of orangutans are listed under CITES Appendix I, meaning they cannot be traded commercially.
