Victory for Sea Otters in the House
In the spring of 2009, the 3-year southern sea otter population average
dropped -- the first downward trend since the late 1990s. This latest trend
shows that southern sea otters still face obstacles to their recovery.
Defenders
activists sent more than 63,000 messages to their U.S. representatives in
support of the Southern Sea Otter Recovery and Research Act (H.R. 556)
introduced by Rep. Sam Farr (CA) -- legislation that provides much-needed
funding for sea otter research and conservation.
The bill faced stiff
opposition from a vocal minority in Congress and was forced to a floor vote that
required 2/3 majority to pass. Thanks in large part to the thousands of messages
from Defenders supporters, the bill passed by a vote of 316-107.
It is
now up to the U.S. Senate to pass a similar bill in order for this important
wildlife-saving legislation to become law.
