Shark Finning Banned in Mexico

In 2007, thanks in part to five years of Juan Carlos Cantu’s hard work in Defenders of Wildlife’s headquarters in Mexico, shark finning was officially banned in Mexico. Shark finning is the practice of catching sharks, cutting off their fins, and throwing the mortally wounded sharks back into the sea.

According to Juan Carlos, “Not only is shark finning banned, but circular hooks are mandatory, drift nets will disappear, more than 95 sea turtle nesting and feeding areas are protected from shark fishing, whale and sea lion calving areas are protected, use of dehookers and other instruments to free sea turtles are mandatory, fishermen must attend workshops on conservation of species at risk like sea turtles and marine mammals, and more!”  Way to go Juan Carlos and all the groups that worked cooperatively to make this happen.
