Protecting the Diamondback Terrapin
"The
bottom line is that you created the pressure that has ferried the bills through
the legislature and that seems to have caused the Governor to shift his
position… What you guys have accomplished for these creatures is huge."
A big thank you was received for Defenders of Wildlife’s mobilization of citizen activists in Maryland to urge the Governor to take a tougher stance on protecting their state reptile and mascot of their flagship university, the diamondback terrapin!
At the urging of activists, Governor O’Malley decided in early 2007 to support a permanent closure of the terrapin fishery that is responsible for putting these creatures on the path toward extinction.
This victory is a great example of Defenders of Wildlife’s expanding efforts to get involved with local wildlife protection.
