Black-footed Ferrets Return to Kansas!
Good news! Larry and Bette Haverfield and other heroic ranchers finally won a long fight to bring endangered black-footed ferrets back to the Kansas prairie.
After receiving more than 16,000 messages from Defenders supporters, U.S. Fish and Wildlife officials released 24 black-footed ferret kits on the Haverfields's private land on December 18, 2007.
Black-footed ferrets need lots of space and prairie dogs to survive. And ever since black-footed ferrets were re-discovered after being declared extinct, it’s been a long, uphill battle to find suitable habitat – and enough of it – to successfully restore them to the Great Plains.
Luckily, the Haverfield ranch contains the largest prairie dog colony in Kansas, making it a prime site for reintroducing captive-raised black-footed ferrets into the wild.
But there was no luck involved in this victory – it took a long time and a lot of hard work. Thank you for doing your part to help write this endangered species success story.
