As Staff Attorney, Brian provides litigation and policy support to Defenders’ Field program staff, with an emphasis on habitat and wildlife issues in the western U.S. Since joining Defenders in 2004, Brian has led two successful cases to preserve wetland and grassland endangered species habitat in California, initiated state and federal litigation to preserve habitats within Nevada National Wildlife Refuges from the effects of proposed groundwater pumping, and petitioned Arizona state agencies to reject a proposed powerline through the only occupied jaguar habitat within the United States. Brian has also helped spearhead Defenders’ efforts to better integrate environmental protection with border security efforts, and in 2006 wrote On the Line: The Impacts of Immigration Policy on Wildlife and Habitat in the Arizona Borderlands. Since 2003, Brian has served on the Board of Directors for the Arizona Wilderness Coalition and on the Environmental Advisory Committee to Representative Raúl Grijalva (D-AZ).

Before joining Defenders, Brian was the Southwest Public Lands Director for the Center for Biological Diversity in Tucson, Arizona, and prior to that served as a recycling policy specialist for the County of San Diego.

Brian Segee earned his B.A. in political science from the University of California at San Diego and his J.D. from the University of Colorado School of Law.
