VOLUNTEER: Online Communications

Location: Washington, D.C.
Supervisor: Vice President of Online Marketing & Communications

Position Description

Defenders of Wildlife is a leading environmental non-profit organization, dedicated to the protection of endangered species and habitat.  With over 800,000 e-supporters, several high-traffic Websites and a strong presence on social networking sites, Defenders is an industry leader in online fundraising, advocacy, and education.

The Online Marketing and Communications Volunteer will be active in many of the Online Marketing & Communications team’s daily activities.  This is an excellent opportunity to get hands-on experience with Websites, e-mails, and online outreach campaigns in a fast-paced and innovative non-profit environment.  The successful Volunteer will help configure e-mails, post content to our Websites, and light writing/editing, among other activities.

Work schedule is flexible, with preference to candidates who are able to volunteer 20-40 hours per week.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

EXPECTED ACTIVITIES:

  • Configure e-mails in our eConstituent Relationship Management (eCRM) system, Convio
  • Post content to our Websites
  • Assist with copywriting and editing for e-mail campaigns and Websites
  • Assist in maintaining and cultivating Defenders’ online communities, including approving friends and monitoring comments on social networking sites (e.g., MySpace and Care2.com); writing and posting action items and blog entries, etc.
  • Participate in team brainstorming and other team activities
  • Provide other general and administrative support to the Online Communications department


Qualifications

Education:  Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) or equivalent preferred

Experience:  Knowledge of Dreamweaver (or other Web editing software), HTML, and Photoshop; Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.

Other Qualifications:

  • Technical savvy, including experience with one or more Content Management Systems desired
  • Experience with one or more eCRM systems desired
  • Flexible work style and sense of humor
  • Excellent organization skills with strong attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Strong copy editing and research skills
